Do you find it hard to give up the sunbed habit - despite knowing all the health risks? If so, it’s possible that you’ve become addicted and need professional help.

That’s the message from researchers in America, who claim that one in three sunbed users are addicted to tanning.

And for some young women, giving up the sunbed sessions can be just as difficult as giving up an addiction to alcohol or drugs.

Researchers in New York said tackling these underlying addiction problems may be the key to encouraging people to quit using sunbeds.

“Despite ongoing efforts to educate the public about the health risks associated with natural and non-solar UV radiation, recreational tanning continues to increase among young adults,” they warned.

They added that sunbed addicts are more prone to suffering with anxiety and suggested that anxiety and depression screening could be useful for people who use sunbeds frequently.

Sadly, it seems the dire health warnings on sunbed use aren’t getting through to many - particularly under 18-year-olds, who risk doing the most damage to their skin. Despite an impending ban on under-18s using sunbeds and public health campaigns, more young women are using sunbeds, putting themselves at a higher risk of developing skin cancer.

Sarah Woolnough, Cancer Research UK’s head of policy, said the findings on addiction to indoor tanning highlighted the importance of the ban on sunbed use by under-18s.

She added: “It is also vital that the new government ensures that all sunbed salons are staffed and that information is provided warning users of the health risks.”
