Hello Betty, I’ve never had a panic attack myself although I used to get palpitations when I was stressed but a friend of mine has them and swears by breathing into a paper bag as it slows down his breathing and stops him feeling high on taking in too much air.
Another friend of mine says that when she has a panic attack she has to remove herself from the situation in which the panic attack started as soon as she can.
And another says that she tries to distract herself from her current thinking.  It helps her to have a planned distractive thought that she mostly tries to think about.  She thinks about the horse she rides and the yard where she goes to ride her and seek her sanctuary.
I hope you’re ok and that this helps in some way.
Thinking of you. Helen

Hi Betty, when my wife left me I used to get panic attacks.  I couldn’t breathe.  I used to try to slow my breathing down by taking long deep breaths and breathing out slowly until I calmed down and they passed.
Hope you’re ok Betty.  Will

Helen and WIll

Thankyou both for your kind words. I have suffered from panic attacks along time and take buspirone for them, which does help. I don’t like busy places and tend to find the walls are caving in on me. I find driving difficult too. My boyfriend drives tho. I hope it won’t always be this way. Thankyou for your kindness regards Betty

Hi there I have suffered panic attacks for the last 16 years. I wouldn’t wish them on anybody. Mine have been improving, changing my diet has been a big factor and reducing stress as well and watching for tell tale signs that I’m pushing myself. Things can get better. A good website for panic attacks is nomorepanic.

Until recently I would have told you that I don’t have panic attacks per-say.  Now I’m not so sure of my self.

I find loud busy places very intimidating and I suffer quite extreme performance anxiety (palpitations, dizziness) both at work and when I used to play in bands/orchestra’s.  My worst memory was playing a cello solo in front of about 600 people - I have absolutely no idea how I managed to get through it.

Just recently I’ve been suffering with depression and my husband has told me that I turn pale when I’m exposed to busy places.  The only way I can cope is to remove myself from the stressful situation ASAP (or shop somewhere quieter)  grin

Dear S, well done you for the last two days.  I note you were up very late given the time of your posts so I hope you get to sleep in and relax today.
I wonder if you’ve seen our recent article on panic attacks and anxiety on the site that was put together by experts and sufferers of panic attacks who now feel they have them under control and what worked for them.  Take care S.  Here’s the link to the article that’s on the Home Page.

Hi Jc123, I used to have panic attacks when my wife and I split up.  I used to just try to breathe slowly and deeply until it passed but they were horrible.  I still remember them now.  Hope you find your way of dealing with them.  Have you read the article on this site about panic attacks? Will
