Carers Week
It’s a very important week for thanking carers for all they do and raising awareness for what they do.
There are up to 1.5 million people in the UK caring for a relative or friend with a mental health problem.
There are over 50 000 children and young people looking after people with a mental health problem in the UK.
This means:
1 in 4 carers are mental health carers.
1 in every 40 people is a mental health carer.

GOING INTO HOSPITAL - INFORMATION FOR CARERS
Care and support for people living with mental illness is provided in the community as far as possible. However, there may be times when your relative becomes so unwell that they are unable to cope at home. When this happens, hospital admission may need to be considered.
This factsheet aims to give carers practical information about hospital admissions. However, hospitals do vary and people may have different experiences from hospital to hospital.
N.B. We understand that someone you care for might not be a member of your family, however in this factsheet we have referred to the person you are caring for as ‘your relative’ and to you as ‘their carer’. This factsheet also uses the word ‘patient’ as this is the term that is used in hospitals.
Caring isn't easy
Supporting someone through depression may bring up all kinds of emotions and issues for you.
Do not try to go it alone.
