No sign-up, no newsletter, no comments, no analytics. I don't know how many people read this and I've chosen not to find out.
Why it matters here more than elsewhere
People arrive at a site like this at bad moments, sometimes on a shared computer or a work machine. The less this site records, the better. So it records nothing.
Server logs
The web server logs requests — IP address, time, page, browser string — and deletes them after seven days. I don't read them.
Messages people send me are kept while I'm replying and then deleted. I don't keep an address list. Nothing anyone has written to me has ever been quoted here without asking first, and in eighteen years I've asked four times.
Fonts
Typefaces load from Google's font service, so a request carrying your IP address reaches it. There's nothing else third-party on these pages.
Clearing your tracks
If you'd rather this visit didn't stay in your browser history, a private window handles it. It's a reasonable thing to want and worth saying out loud.
